At the far west edge of Chicago’s burgeoning suburbs lies a mid-sized, semi-rural, middle-American city with more than 5,500 children in its public schools. DeKalb, Illinois (population 40,000) also houses one the nation’s best institutions of higher learning – Northern Illinois University, a leading producer of new teachers and exciting educational partnerships.

The partnership between local school district and regional university has evolved into a national model of synergy and cooperation. At its heart, the partnership seeks to:

  • improve the preschool-through-high-school experience
  • foster educational innovation and expanded use of technology
  • enhance student performance at all levels
  • improve teacher preparation
  • expand school programs to serve whole families and meet multiple needs
