DeKalb (Illinois) School District #428
DeKalb District #428 serves students from the DeKalb, Malta and Cortland
communities. It is considered a “Large Unit” district, with
a total enrollment in Fall 2002 of 5,282 students in eleven schools.
The student body in District #428 reflects the increasingly diverse
community it serves. In Fall 2002, slightly more than one quarter of
all district students were members of a minority group (African-American,
Latino, Asian or Native American).
More than 338 certified educators teach in District #428 schools.
More than half hold master’s degrees, and the average amount of
classroom experience per teacher is more than 12 years.

Northern Illinois University
Northern Illinois University is a major, comprehensive teaching and
research institution serving more than 25,000 students. Located in one
of the most dynamic regions of the country, and with its main campus
just one hour west of Chicago in DeKalb, Illinois, NIU also operates
outreach centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon,
Illinois.
Chartered in 1895 as a teacher’s college, NIU today is one of
the nation’s largest and most highly-regarded public universities,
with memberships in the prestigious National Association of State Universities
and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), and the Universities Research Association
(URA).
The university’s academic program consists of seven degree-granting
colleges that together offer 51 undergraduate degree programs and 70
